Guitar, Drums 'n' Bass

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Guitar, Drums 'n' Bass was released in 1996 on Avant Records. The guitarist Derek Bailey had spent years improvising over jungle and drum and bass on pirate radio. He suggested to John Zorn that they make an album of it. Zorn found the Birmingham producer D.J. Ninj, who recorded his music in the spring of 1995. A first session with the engineer Mick Harris failed. In October 1995 the guitarist recorded his improvisations over Ninj's music, in Bill Laswell's studio in New York.

The drum and bass sounds booming and minimal, while the guitar is inventive, loud and fast, with broken-off licks, heavy distortion and jangling sounds. The record is regarded as the first combination of free improvisation on guitar and breakbeat music. It received glowing reviews and was the first genre experiment of the late 1990s, when he recorded with unexpected, non-improvising partners.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Concrete (Cement-Mix) and notice how the guitar plays short, distorted phrases above the booming rhythm.
