Yankees
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Yankees is an album of improvised music by the guitarist Derek Bailey, the trombonist George Lewis and the alto saxophonist John Zorn. It was released in 1983 as an LP on Celluloid and later came out on CD, once from vinyl and once on Charly from the original master tape. It was the first time the guitarist and Zorn appeared together on record. In 1993 the two made Harras, together with William Parker. All five pieces are credited to the whole trio.
The record was well received. AllMusic gave it four stars and called its elaborations on the trivia of baseball sounds subtle, dry and hilarious. The Penguin Guide to Jazz counted it among the great improvisation records of the decade, although it increasingly feels like a Zorn project.
