Genesis

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Genesis began in 1967 at Charterhouse School in Godalming, a boarding school in Surrey. The founders were pupils: Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips and the drummer Chris Stewart. They got their name from Jonathan King, a former pupil who worked as an impresario and had their debut album From Genesis to Revelation, from 1969, recorded. The group then chose its own path at Charisma Records, with Trespass in 1970 as a first step towards progressive rock. With Phil Collins and Steve Hackett added, the line-up of Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot came about.

Music and breakthrough

In the 1970s Genesis were among the pioneers of progressive rock. Their live shows became famous for Gabriel's theatrical costumes and performances. Selling England by the Pound from 1973 brought the first British hit, I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe). After the concept double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Gabriel left the band. Collins took over the vocals, and after Hackett's departure a trio remained: Banks, Rutherford and Collins.

Influence

With ...And Then There Were Three... (1978) came the first big hit, Follow You Follow Me. On Duke, Abacab, Genesis and Invisible Touch the band sounded more and more like a pop group, and that success lasted until We Can't Dance in 1991. In 1996 Collins left, and Ray Wilson sang on the last studio album, Calling All Stations. The course mentions Genesis in connection with the design agency Hipgnosis, which also made sleeves for this band. That shows how closely image and music went together in the 1970s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Follow You Follow Me. Notice how short and poppy this song is, and think how different the long songs from the Gabriel period must have sounded.
