From Genesis to Revelation · From Genesis to Revelation, Genesis's debut, was released on 28 March 1969 on Decca. The basis was a pile of demos from 1967, recorded when the band members were still pupils at Charterhouse in Godalming. They gave the tape to Jonathan King, who gave the group its name, arranged contracts and booked studio time at Regent Sound Studios. Later Arthur Greenslade added strings to some of the songs. During the recording, John Silver replaced the drummer Chris Stewart.

The album and the singles, including Silent Sun and A Winter's Tale, flopped and received mixed to negative reviews. King felt that the young musicians still had to learn to play and kept their complicated arrangements short. In mid-1969 the group broke off contact with him. In 1974, when the band had become popular, the album did reach number 170 on the American Billboard 200.
