The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway · In May 1974 Genesis finished the tour for Selling England by the Pound and withdrew to Headley Grange, a large former workhouse, to write new material. The band wanted to make a double album, before it even knew what it would be about. Peter Gabriel devised the story of Rael, a rebellious youth in New York who ends up in an underworld, and wrote all the lyrics. That broke with the habit of working together. The other four therefore wrote the music mainly in jam sessions.

The record leaves behind the English fairyland of earlier work and opts for American imagery, experimental sounds and shorter songs. Critics reacted in mixed fashion, and sales lagged behind those of its predecessors. Gabriel left the band afterwards. In retrospect the album is often seen as a high point of progressive rock.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Carpet Crawlers and notice how quiet and strange this piece sounds, like a fragment from Rael's dream story.
