A Trick of the Tail

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Trick of the Tail · At the end of 1974, the singer Peter Gabriel decided to leave Genesis. The rest of the band looked for a new frontman, but had already written an album when the music press got the news in August 1975. Recording began in October at Trident Studios in London, with David Hentschel as producer. An advertisement in Melody Maker brought about 400 replies, but no singer. In the end the drummer Phil Collins reluctantly sang Squonk, and the others felt he should do it.

The music is progressive rock, largely written by Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. Los Endos closes the album with glances back at earlier pieces and a few lines from Supper's Ready as a salute to Gabriel. Critics were impressed that the group had survived the departure without any loss of quality. The album reached number 3 in the United Kingdom. On the tour, Bill Bruford appeared behind the drums.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Los Endos and notice the moments when themes from earlier pieces return. At the end, hear whether you recognise the lines from Supper's Ready.
