Foxtrot
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Genesis made Foxtrot in the summer of 1972, in between concerts. After Nursery Cryme the group gained in popularity, especially in Italy and Belgium. The songs combined pieces that had already been played live, such as Watcher of the Skies and Can-Utility and the Coastliners, with new material from jam sessions. The recording at Island Studios in London went badly. The band clashed with the producer Bob Potter, among other things over the Mellotron opening of Watcher of the Skies, and the sessions were broken off. The group then continued with Dave Hitchcock.
The album contains Supper's Ready, at 23 minutes the longest piece the band had recorded. The sleeve, the last by Paul Whitehead, shows a fox in a red dress. Peter Gabriel put on that dress and a fox's head during the tour, which drew attention from the press. Foxtrot was the group's first album in the British charts, received mostly good reviews and is still praised.
