Trespass

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Trespass was released on 23 October 1970 on Charisma Records and is the last album with the guitarist Anthony Phillips and the only one with the drummer John Mayhew. In the preceding months the band wrote most of the material at Christmas Cottage in Surrey and played a lot live. In July 1970 it recorded the album at Trident Studios in London, with John Anthony as producer and engineer.

The music opts for folk-like progressive rock instead of the pop sound of the debut. Dusk is light and acoustic, with several twelve-string guitars, while The Knife is heavier and a favourite on stage. Shortly after the recording Phillips left, which almost caused the group to break up. The album had little success and received mixed reviews, but did well in Belgium.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Dusk and notice the twelve-string guitars, which here do not stay in the background but carry the melody themselves.
