Neo-prog
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Neo-prog arose in England around 1981, when progressive rock had gone out of fashion. Young bands such as Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon and Twelfth Night took early Genesis and Camel as their example, but played with the energy and sound of the 1980s: shorter songs, glossy synthesizers and a singer who played a role on stage. Marillion of Aylesbury became the biggest. The concept album Misplaced Childhood (1985) reached number 1 in England, and Kayleigh reached number two.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Kayleigh for how the guitar carries the melody with a clear, echoing sound, while Fish sings his lyrics like a letter to a lost love.
