Misplaced Childhood
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Misplaced Childhood is Marillion's third studio album and was released on 17 June 1985. The group recorded it in the spring at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, with producer Chris Kimsey, who had previously worked for the Rolling Stones. It is their first true concept album, with one continuous piece of music on each side of the LP. Singer Fish came up with the story during a ten-hour LSD trip. It is loosely about his youth and revolves around lost love, sudden success and the loss of childhood, with a hopeful ending.
Kayleigh is a ballad with guitar, and Lavender is a piano-led song partly based on the folk song Lavender Blue. Both became big hits. Heart of Lothian refers to Fish's region of Scotland. The album went straight to number one in Great Britain and is the group's most successful record. In 2003 Classic Rock ranked it fourth in a list of the best concept albums.
