Smash
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Smash · For their third album The Offspring went to Track Record in North Hollywood in January 1994. They recorded it in twenty days, with producer Thom Wilson. The budget was small: twenty thousand dollars. The band kept looking for an empty studio to slip into cheaply, and the last four songs came about in two nights. The previous album Ignition had not brought the big breakthrough, and nobody expected radio success.
Yet Smash became exactly that. Thanks to the rise of grunge, punk rock gained a wider audience. Come Out and Play reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock chart, and Self Esteem and Gotta Get Away also became hits. Together with Green Day's Dookie the record brought punk into the mainstream and paved the way for the pop punk of the 1990s. The album mostly received positive reviews and became the best-selling album ever released by an independent label.
