From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The Offspring is an American rock band from Garden Grove, California, formed in 1984 under the name Manic Subsidal. The group now consists of singer and guitarist Dexter Holland, guitarist Noodles, bassist Todd Morse, Jonah Nimoy and drummer Brandon Pertzborn. They first gained a local following with their album The Offspring from 1989 and the EP Baghdad from 1991. They then signed with the independent label Epitaph Records and made Ignition in 1992 and Smash in 1994.

Music and breakthrough

Smash contained the first big hit, Come Out and Play, and is regarded as one of the best-selling albums on an independent label. It brought punk rock back to the general public. In 1996 the group signed with Columbia Records, which released Ixnay on the Hombre in 1997. The album Americana from 1998 produced Pretty Fly (For a White Guy), Why Don't You Get a Job? and The Kids Aren't Alright, hits on radio and MTV. In 2008 Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace was released, with You're Gonna Go Far, Kid.

Influence

The music of The Offspring is fast, melodic punk rock, with heavy guitars and an easy-to-follow chorus. In the 1990s the band played a key role in the renewed success of punk. Self Esteem from Smash lets you hear how that style sounded.
