Dookie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Green Day had made two albums for the independent Lookout! Records when major labels came knocking. The band chose Reprise because the producer Rob Cavallo understood them well, and signed in April 1993. Dookie was recorded that year at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and Music Grinder Studio in Hollywood. For the first time the band members had ample time and money to perfect sounds and guitar tones. Many old fans afterwards called the band sellouts.

Billie Joe Armstrong wrote most of the songs, about boredom, anxiety, relationships and sexuality. After years of grunge, the album brought a livelier and more melodic rock sound to the general public. Singles were Longview, Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise in a new version and When I Come Around. The album received glowing reviews and a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. It is regarded as a model for later punk and pop punk bands.

Listening

Listening tip. In Longview, listen to the melody and the way the lyrics describe boredom. Notice how melodic the band sounds, despite the fast tempo.
