Green Day

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Green Day was founded in 1987 in Rodeo, California, by the singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and the bassist Mike Dirnt. The band was first called Sweet Children and in 1989 chose the name Green Day. In 1990 the drummer Tré Cool joined, succeeding John Kiffmeyer. The group grew up in the punk scene around the club 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley and released its first records on the small label Lookout! Records.

Music and breakthrough

The breakthrough came with Dookie (1994), the first album on the major label Reprise. The producer Rob Cavallo recorded it with the band at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The sound was punk, short and fast, but with melodies you could sing along to after one hearing. Basket Case, in which Armstrong writes about his panic attacks, spent five weeks at number 1 on the American alternative radio chart and reached number seven in England. At Woodstock '94 the performance ended in a mud fight with the audience. In 1995 Dookie won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album.

Influence

After grunge, Green Day made punk suitable for the hit parade again, and pop punk became a genre of its own. In 2004 came American Idiot, a narrative album about America after 9/11, which won a Grammy for Best Rock Album. In 2010 it premiered on Broadway as a musical. In 2015 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the first year it was eligible.

Listening

Listening tip. Basket Case begins with only Billie Joe Armstrong's voice and guitar; then the band comes in. Listen to the chord sequence in the verse: the same progression as in Pachelbel's Canon, but at punk tempo.
