Nimrod

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Nimrod · After Insomniac, which was less successful than Dookie, Green Day decided in 1996 to cancel the European tour. The group had had enough of playing in large arenas and missed home. In that time the band wrote more than thirty new songs. Rob Cavallo remained producer and the recording at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles took four months. Billie Joe Armstrong wanted to break through the limitations of ordinary punk rock, with London Calling by the Clash as inspiration.

The album therefore sounds varied: folk, hardcore, surf rock and ska stand side by side. Hitchin' a Ride opens with a violin, King for a Day has a horn section and Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) was given strings. That last song was heard, among other places, in Seinfeld. The reviews were favourable and praised the songwriting in particular.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) and notice how an acoustic guitar and strings take the place of the usual punk guitars.
