White Pony

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

White Pony was recorded at The Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito, with the producer Terry Date, who had also made the first two albums. The band worked in the studio for four months, longer than ever, and took their time, even though there was pressure to release sooner. Frank Delgado became a permanent member for the first time, on turntables and synthesizer, and Chino Moreno played rhythm guitar for the first time. Moreno did not write about himself, but devised storylines.

Deftones' third album added influences from post-hardcore, trip hop, shoegaze, progressive rock and post-rock to alternative metal. Change (In the House of Flies) was the first single and became a radio hit; Elite won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2001. On Passenger, Maynard James Keenan of Tool sings along. Critics see the record as a turning point: NPR Music spoke of a new direction for heavy and experimental music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Passenger and notice the interplay between the voices of Chino Moreno and Maynard James Keenan, with piano and keyboard beneath, before heavy guitars launch the choruses.
