Around the Fur

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Around the Fur · For their second album Deftones moved to Seattle in 1997. From April to June they recorded at Studio Litho, which belongs to Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam. The four band members rented an apartment in South Seattle while they wrote and recorded. Terry Date produced again, and this time the band wanted to sound more refined. Cunningham used a different snare drum on almost every song. Max Cavalera of Sepultura sings along on Headup.

Around the Fur was released on 28 October 1997 on Maverick. Critics praised the shifts between soft and hard, the good sequencing of the songs and Moreno's distinctive vocals. The singles My Own Summer (Shove It) and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) received a lot of airplay and were also played on MTV. In 1998 the record won a Kerrang! Award for best album.

Listening

Listening tip. In Headup, listen to the extra vocals of Max Cavalera alongside those of Chino Moreno.
