Adrenaline

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham and Chino Moreno were school friends in Sacramento and began playing together around 1988 in Carpenter's garage. Later the bassist Chi Cheng joined. Adrenaline, their debut, was released on 3 October 1995 on Maverick Records. Terry Date produced most of it; the hidden track Fist came from Ross Robinson. The band recorded the record quickly, and Moreno sang all his parts live in the same room as the band.

The music is described as nu metal, post-hardcore and alternative metal. Singles were 7 Words and Bored. Critics compared the band with, among others, Helmet, Korn and Nine Inch Nails and praised the new sound. AllMusic called the group controlled, even in the midst of chaos, and The Rough Guide to Heavy Metal counts the record among the best examples of nu metal.

Listening

Listening tip. In Lifter, listen to the sharp guitar of Stephen Carpenter and notice how tight it sounds.
