Korn
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Korn is an American band from Bakersfield in California. The group came out of the band L.A.P.D., of which James Shaffer, Reginald Arvizu and David Silveria were members. Together with guitarist Brian Welch and singer Jonathan Davis they formed Korn. The band writes its name with a reversed R, copied from the logo of Toys R Us, where some members had previously worked. A demo from 1993 was distributed free to record companies and fans.
Music and breakthrough
The debut album Korn appeared in October 1994, recorded with producer Ross Robinson, and contains Blind. Commercial success came with Life Is Peachy in 1996, and above all with Follow the Leader in 1998 and Issues in 1999, which both debuted at number one on the American Billboard 200. Videos such as Got the Life and Freak on a Leash were shown a great deal on MTV. Later came Untouchables in 2002 and Requiem in 2022, among others.
Influence
The music combines metal and rock with hip hop influences, groove and dissonance, with lyrics about pain and alienation. Korn is regarded as a pioneer of nu metal. The debut album is seen as the beginning of that style and inspired bands such as Slipknot, Coal Chamber and Limp Bizkit. In this way the group stands at the beginning of one of the defining rock movements of the 1990s.
