Follow the Leader

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Follow the Leader · For the third album, the band chose a producer other than Ross Robinson for the first time: Steve Thompson, together with the engineer Toby Wright. Halfway through the recording, Thompson was fired, after which Wright took over and all the vocal tracks had to be recorded again. Robinson stayed on as a vocal coach. Guests include Ice Cube on Children of the Korn and Fred Durst on All In the Family. The cover, drawn by the team of Todd McFarlane, shows a child skipping towards the edge of a cliff.

Critics heard metal with industrial touches and hip hop rhythms. It's On opens with distorted guitars, heavy beats and a scream of rage. Got the Life and Freak On a Leash became singles, and the video for Freak On a Leash won awards. The reviews were largely positive. The album is regarded as the record that brought nu metal into the mainstream.
