Industrial
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
In the late 1970s Throbbing Gristle of London made music from noise, tape loops and electronics, released on their own label Industrial Records: industrial. Cabaret Voltaire of Sheffield worked in the same way. From 1980 Einstürzende Neubauten of Berlin hit metal plates and used power drills as instruments. In the late 1980s Nine Inch Nails, with Pretty Hate Machine (1989) and The Downward Spiral (1994), brought industrial to rock and the charts.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Mr. Self Destruct, the opening track of The Downward Spiral, for the mechanical beat, the distorted sounds and the voice of Trent Reznor going from whispering to screaming.
