The Downward Spiral
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Downward Spiral · Trent Reznor wrote this concept album after a tour on Lollapalooza, when he felt alienated and was struggling with depression and addiction. He had a quarrel with TVT Records and founded Nothing Records with his manager. The record was mainly recorded in a house in Los Angeles where the Manson Family murders took place in 1969. Reznor turned it into the studio Le Pig. With producer Flood, guitarist Adrian Belew and drummers Chris Vrenna and Stephen Perkins, a sound full of texture came about.
It is industrial rock with techno, metal and ambient, without the usual verse and chorus. Reznor processed guitars and vocals on the computer into abstract sounds. The story follows a man who descends into madness and suicide. The album entered at number two in America and became a cultural phenomenon. It also caused an outcry over crude lyrics, as in Big Man with a Gun.
