Quake

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Quake is the soundtrack of the id Software computer game of the same name from 1996. Trent Reznor made the music with his band Nine Inch Nails and also supplied the sound effects, entirely free of charge, out of mutual admiration for each other's work. The music was on the same disc as the game. Only in 2020 did a vinyl version appear, which also made the official titles known.

It is mostly ambient, and for Reznor it was the first time he had worked with that genre. He himself said that it is not music but textures, atmospheres and turning machine noises, meant to be as sinister as possible. The atmosphere is dark and oppressive, fitting the game. The reactions were positive. GameSpot called it the best soundtrack ever made for a computer game.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Quake Theme with headphones and notice the dark textures and machine noises. What kind of atmosphere do they evoke in you?
