Fragile
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Fragile is the third studio album by Nine Inch Nails. Nothing Records and Interscope Records released it on 21 September 1999 as a double album with a left and a right disc. Trent Reznor produced it with Alan Moulder, who also mixed it. Recording lasted from January 1997 to July 1999 and took place at Nothing Studios in New Orleans. Reznor played most of it himself. Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner, Jerome Dillon, Adrian Belew, Mike Garson and Bill Rieflin, among others, contributed to a few tracks.
Reznor described the album as a sequel to The Downward Spiral (1994). It sounds less harsh: industrial rock and art rock, with ambient and electronica. On release it entered at number 1 on the American Billboard 200, with 229,000 copies in its first week, and it is certified double platinum in the United States. Reviewers praised the ambition and criticised the length. Things Falling Apart followed in 2000.
