With Teeth

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

With Teeth · After The Fragile from 1999, Trent Reznor sank into a deep pit: addiction to alcohol and drugs, depression and writer's block. He went to a rehab clinic in Florida and afterwards found that writing came naturally again. He had first conceived a concept record, with a dream from which you cannot wake as an image for getting sober. It became a tight record with the working title Bleedthrough. He dropped that title in October 2004.

With Teeth was released on 3 May 2005 on Nothing Records and Interscope. Reznor produced it with Alan Moulder, and Dave Grohl and Atticus Ross contributed. It is the fourth album by Nine Inch Nails and had three singles: The Hand That Feeds, Only and Every Day Is Exactly the Same. The reviews were good, although somewhat less glowing than for earlier work. Some praised the aggression, others found it colourless.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Hand That Feeds and notice how bare and tight the song is built. What is left when there are no extra layers?
