Atticus Ross

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Atticus Ross is an English musician, composer, producer and sound engineer, born in 1968 in Ladbroke Grove in London. In the mid-1990s he made his name as a synthesizer programmer for Tim Simenon's Bomb the Bass, and he worked with Barry Adamson. After that he started a band of his own, 12 Rounds. In 2000 he moved to the United States and from 2002 worked with Trent Reznor on the side project Tapeworm. From 2005 he worked for Nine Inch Nails, first as programmer and producer, and since 2016 as the only official member besides Reznor.

Music and breakthrough

Ross and Reznor became best known for film music. Ross began with it in 2004 with the TV series Touching Evil, followed by The Book of Eli in 2010. For David Fincher's The Social Network they received an Oscar for best original score in 2010. For The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a Grammy followed, and for Gone Girl in 2014 another collaboration with Fincher. They also wrote the music for Love & Mercy, about Brian Wilson, in 2015, and for Soul they received an Oscar together with Jon Batiste in 2021. In 2020 Ross was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Nine Inch Nails.

Influence

His work uses electronic sounds, programming and studio technique as an instrument, and comes out of industrial and electronic rock. Ross shows how you can have an influence behind the scenes on the popular music of an entire period: as programmer, producer and composer he turned his studio work into a second career in film.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a piece from the music of The Social Network, for example one of the quiet electronic tracks. Notice how cold, repeated sounds build a tense atmosphere.
