Atticus Ross

Atticus Ross is een Engelse musicus, componist, producer en geluidstechnicus, in 1968 geboren in Ladbroke Grove in Londen. Midden jaren negentig viel hij op als synthesizerprogrammeur voor Bomb the Bass van Tim Simenon, en werkte hij samen met Barry Adamson. Daarna begon hij een eigen band, 12 Rounds. In 2000 verhuisde hij naar de Verenigde Staten en werkte vanaf 2002 met Trent Reznor aan het zijproject Tapeworm. Vanaf 2005 werkte hij voor Nine Inch Nails, eerst als programmeur en producer, en sinds 2016 als enige officiële lid naast Reznor.
Muziek en doorbraak
Ross en Reznor werden vooral bekend met filmmuziek. Ross begon daarmee in 2004 met de tv serie Touching Evil, gevolgd door The Book of Eli in 2010. Voor The Social Network van David Fincher kregen ze in 2010 een Oscar voor beste filmmuziek. Voor The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo volgde een Grammy, en voor Gone Girl in 2014 weer een samenwerking met Fincher. Ook schreven ze de muziek voor Love & Mercy over Brian Wilson uit 2015, en voor Soul kregen ze samen met Jon Batiste in 2021 een Oscar. In 2020 werd Ross als lid van Nine Inch Nails opgenomen in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Invloed
Zijn werk gebruikt elektronische klanken, programmeren en studiotechniek als instrument, en komt voort uit de industrial en elektronische rock. Ross toont hoe je achter de schermen invloed kunt hebben op de popmuziek van een hele periode: als programmeur, producer en componist maakte hij van zijn studiowerk een tweede loopbaan in de film.
