Trent Reznor

Trent Reznor werd in 1965 geboren in New Castle, Pennsylvania, en groeide op in het landelijke Mercer. Hij leerde als kind piano en speelde op school tenorsaxofoon en tuba in de jazzband en de marchingband. In 1982 begon hij in synthpopbands zoals The Innocent, Slam Bamboo en Exotic Birds. In 1988 richtte hij Nine Inch Nails op, waarvan hij tot 2016 het enige officiële lid was. Hij schrijft de nummers, zingt en speelt de instrumenten zelf.
Muziek en doorbraak
Het eerste album Pretty Hate Machine verscheen in 1989 en bleef vooral populair bij een ondergronds publiek. The Downward Spiral uit 1994 en The Fragile uit 1999 brachten het brede lof van critici. De muziek combineert de kilte van synthesizers en drumcomputers met het geweld van rock, en wordt industrial rock genoemd. Reznor werkte ook mee aan platen van Marilyn Manson, Saul Williams en Halsey en vormde in 2009 met zijn vrouw en vaste medewerkers de groep How to Destroy Angels.
Invloed
Sinds 2010 maakt hij samen met Atticus Ross filmmuziek, vooral voor regisseurs als David Fincher en Luca Guadagnino. Voor The Social Network en Soul wonnen ze een Academy Award voor beste originele score. Ook schreven ze de muziek voor Watchmen en de documentaire The Vietnam War. Daarmee is Reznor een zeldzaam voorbeeld van een popmuzikant die uitgroeide tot filmcomponist. In de jaren tachtig van School of Rock past hij als iemand die synthesizers en agressieve gitaren samenbracht, zoals in Head Like a Hole uit 1989.
