Pretty Hate Machine
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Pretty Hate Machine is the debut album of Nine Inch Nails and was released on 20 October 1989 on TVT Records. Trent Reznor worked at night as a handyman and technician at Right Track Studio in Cleveland. There, in the quiet of the studio, he recorded his own demo, almost entirely by himself. The demo won him a contract with TVT. He recorded the album in various studios with producers he admired, including Flood, Keith LeBlanc and John Fryer. There was no ordinary band.
The sound revolves around synthesizers and drum machines, with catchy riffs and a regular song structure, unlike much other industrial music. The lyrics are about youthful anxiety and the feeling of being betrayed by lovers, society or God. Head Like a Hole is the most rock-like song. The record received very good reviews and became a breakthrough for independently released music, even though Reznor quarrelled with TVT over promotion.
