Korn

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Korn recorded their debut in May and June 1994 at Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, with the producer Ross Robinson, who had also made their 1993 demo. The group played most of the record live together, rather than instrument by instrument. The studio stood on a hill, so recording could also be done outside. Immortal/Epic had signed the band after a performance in Huntington Beach, because they were unwilling to give up creative freedom.

For many, the album counts as the first nu metal album: the heavy sounds of extreme metal combined with vocals, clothing and rhythms from hip hop. Blind opens with the two guitars of James Shaffer and Brian Welch and the opening line Are you ready?. The lyrics deal with child abuse, drug use and bullying. Faget is about the school years of the singer Jonathan Davis, who was bullied. The album reached number 72 on the Billboard 200 and by 2003 had already sold 2.1 million copies in the United States.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Shoots and Ladders and notice the bagpipes: the singer walked outside past the studio playing them, which is why the sound naturally becomes softer.
