Matt Bellamy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Matt Bellamy is the singer, guitarist, pianist and lyricist of the British rock band Muse. He was born in 1978 in Cambridge and grew up in Teignmouth, a seaside town in Devon. At school he played in bands with the drummer Dominic Howard; the bassist Chris Wolstenholme joined, and in 1994 the trio called itself Muse.

Music and breakthrough

The debut Showbiz appeared in 1999. It was followed by, among others, Origin of Symmetry (2001), Absolution (2003), Black Holes and Revelations (2006) and The Resistance (2009), with songs such as Plug In Baby, Supermassive Black Hole, Knights of Cydonia and Uprising. Muse won two Grammys for best rock album, for The Resistance and Drones (2015). The music mixes heavy guitar rock with influences from Romantic classical music: piano parts, broad melodies and sometimes a whole orchestra, as in Butterflies and Hurricanes.

Influence

Bellamy has a tenor voice with a wide range. He sings with vibrato and falsetto and stretches syllables over several notes, something he partly took from Jeff Buckley. On the guitar he uses effects that make the instrument sound like a synthesizer, such as fuzz, arpeggiators and pitch shifters. His guitars, built by Manson, have built-in effects and a touch panel with which he can control sounds; in 2019 he bought a majority stake in that company. Besides Muse he wrote, with Ilan Eshkeri, music for a radio play of 1984 and for the television series MobLand (2025).

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Muscle Museum to how the song alternates between restrained verses and loud outbursts of guitar and drums. Notice the moment when Bellamy launches into his high falsetto in the chorus.
