Black Holes and Revelations

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Black Holes and Revelations · After Absolution, the band withdrew to Studio Miraval, an old castle in the south of France, to write without a deadline. Producer Rich Costey joined them two weeks later. Progress was slow, and the group moved to New York, where Matt Bellamy visited the clubs and learned to DJ. You can hear that in the dance rhythms of Supermassive Black Hole and Map of the Problematique. The band bought old synthesizers, such as a Buchla 200e, and learned to work with them. Most of the work took place in New York, with the finishing touches in Italy. The album took about four months.

The influences range from Depeche Mode to Sly and the Family Stone and music from southern Italy. Knights of Cydonia has a mariachi trumpet and a galloping drum rhythm, and ends with a guitar solo. The lyrics deal with political corruption, alien invasion and revolution, alongside ordinary love songs. The album received good reviews and appeared on year-end lists.
