Absolution
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Absolution · For their third album the band took their time, because earlier recordings had been rushed. In early 2002 they rented a country house near Brighton to write, and during that period their American label dropped them. Most of the work took place at Grouse Lodge in Ireland, under heavy pressure from quarrels with the record company and a lawsuit. Singer Matt Bellamy later spoke of a sense of impending doom. Producer Rich Costey wanted a bigger, more aggressive sound. He kept editing to a minimum for a human sound, and used the Kyma system for much of the sound processing. For the intro of Apocalypse Please, the band recorded two bass drums in the studio's swimming pool.
The album mixes rock with orchestra, as in Butterflies and Hurricanes and Blackout, and has apocalyptic themes. Stockholm Syndrome, Time Is Running Out, Hysteria and Sing for Absolution were released as singles. Time Is Running Out became the group's first top ten single in England.
