Please

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Please is Pet Shop Boys' debut album, released on 24 March 1986 on Parlophone. Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant had by then been writing together for well over three years. Their music grew out of Italian disco, the emerging American hip hop and the electronic dance music of Bobby Orlando. For the album they chose producer Stephen Hague. He made West End Girls slower and gloomier, with a cinematic intro of street sounds. Recording took ten weeks at Advision Studios in London.

The songs loosely form a story: running away, arriving in the city, wanting to make money, falling in love, moving to the suburbs. Tennant plays various roles and sometimes writes satirically, as in Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money). In Two Divided by Zero the voice of a talking calculator is heard. West End Girls became a number 1. The duo chose the title so that you could simply ask for the album in the shop, please.

Listening tip. Listen to Two Divided by Zero and notice the voice of the talking calculator. How does it fit the feeling of running away?
