The Resistance
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Resistance, Muse's fifth studio album, was released on 14 September 2009. The band produced it themselves in their own studio in Como, Italy, between September 2008 and May 2009. For the lyrics, Bellamy drew inspiration from George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. As a result the record revolves around politics and oppression, and the music mixes rock with orchestra and electronics.
Uprising became the first single. According to Bellamy, Undisclosed Desires is the first Muse song without guitar or piano, with an influence of R&B and synth bass. The closer is Exogenesis, a symphony in three parts lasting thirteen minutes, with an orchestra of more than forty musicians, about the end of humanity. Critics praised the concept and the vocals, but some found it over the top and a copy of Queen. In 2011 the record won a Grammy for Best Rock Album.
