Linkin Park
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Linkin Park formed in 1996 in Agoura Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles. The band was first called Xero and then Hybrid Theory. In March 1999 the singer Chester Bennington joined. He formed a duo with Mike Shinoda, who rapped and co-produced the music. With the guitarist Brad Delson, the bassist Dave Farrell, the drummer Rob Bourdon and the DJ Joe Hahn, Linkin Park became one of the most successful bands of nu metal.
Music and breakthrough
The debut Hybrid Theory was released in October 2000. In its first year it sold 4.8 million copies, and it became the best-selling album of 2001. In the End reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The sound combined heavy guitars with hip-hop and electronics: Hahn scratched and added samples, Shinoda rapped and Bennington sang and screamed. Meteora (2003) sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week. Numb, the closing track, spent twelve weeks at number 1 on the American modern rock chart.
Influence
In 2004 Linkin Park made the remix record Collision Course with the rapper Jay-Z. Numb/Encore won a Grammy for best collaboration between rap and vocals. Chester Bennington died on 20 July 2017. In September 2024 the band returned, with the singer Emily Armstrong and the drummer Colin Brittain, and released the album From Zero. Linkin Park showed how far rock and hip-hop had blended into one another around 2000.
