Meteora

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Meteora · After the debut Hybrid Theory and the remix album Reanimation, Linkin Park wanted to make a second studio album that would extend the sound with more experimental ideas. The band wrote around 80 demos while on tour, worked on the pre-production in Mike Shinoda's home studio and recorded the album with the producer Don Gilmore. It was the first album with the bassist Dave Farrell. The recording took almost a year, and during mastering there was even security to prevent leaks.

The sound closely resembles that of the debut: heavy guitars, rap, scratches and vocals about anger, doubt and recovery. The intro of Somewhere I Belong came about when Shinoda and Joe Hahn reversed and processed a guitar recording. In Breaking the Habit we hear strings, arranged by David Campbell. Critics were mostly positive, although some felt the record resembled its predecessor too much.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the beginning of Somewhere I Belong: the floating, sweeping sound of the intro is a reversed guitar part.
