Hybrid Theory
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hybrid Theory is Linkin Park's debut album, released on 24 October 2000. The band grew out of the rap group Xero, which Mike Shinoda and two school friends started in 1996. The singer Chester Bennington joined the group in 1999, and the producer Don Gilmore recorded the record in four months in North Hollywood. The title refers to the earlier band name and to the combining of styles. The lyrics deal largely with Bennington's youth, with drugs, alcohol and his parents' divorce.
The sound is usually called nu metal, rap metal or rap rock. Shinoda raps in the verses, Bennington sings and screams. One Step Closer is known for the shout "Shut up when I'm talkin' to you!". In the End revolves around a piano riff by Shinoda. Four tracks were released as singles and made the band world famous. The record was a great commercial success and is called the best-selling debut record since Appetite for Destruction. Crawling won a Grammy.
