Minutes to Midnight

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Minutes to Midnight · After Meteora, Linkin Park set to work on a third album in 2003, but solo projects by Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington temporarily halted the work. The band then returned with the producer Rick Rubin, and that led to a different direction. The recording took fourteen months, much longer than on the previous records, and the group wrote more than a hundred songs. The title refers to the Doomsday Clock.

The band largely left the nu metal sound behind and opted for a more restrained, more classic rock sound with influences from punk and hip hop. There is much less rapping and Joe Hahn's scratches have moved into the background. For the first time guitar solos are heard, and six tracks received strings by David Campbell. The album received mixed reviews, but Rolling Stone placed it at number twenty-five among the records of 2007.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Hands Held High to the combination of church organ and military march rhythm, over which Mike Shinoda raps almost the entire song.
