Can

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Can was a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne in 1968 by Holger Czukay on bass and tape editing, Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, Michael Karoli on guitar and Jaki Liebezeit on drums. Czukay and Schmidt came from the academic music world and were pupils of Karlheinz Stockhausen. The group was at first called Inner Space and took the name Can at the suggestion of the singer Malcolm Mooney, because of its meaning in various languages. Mooney sang from 1968 to 1970, followed by the Japanese Damo Suzuki until 1973.

Music and breakthrough

They set up a studio of their own in the castle Schloss Nörvenich, where their 1969 debut Monster Movie came into being. Tago Mago followed in 1971, Ege Bamyasi in 1972, which includes Vitamin C, and Future Days in 1973. The singles Spoon in 1971 and I Want More in 1976 reached national charts.

Influence

Can mixed psychedelic rock, funk, samba and musique concrète. The music often arose from long improvisations, which were edited afterwards, with a tight, hypnotic drum part by Liebezeit as its foundation. The group is regarded as one of the pioneers of krautrock and has influenced rock, post-punk, indie rock, post-rock and ambient.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Vitamin C from Ege Bamyasi. Notice Liebezeit's tight, repeating drums and how the bass and guitar build a groove around them without ever hurrying.
