Future Days

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Future Days · After the tour for Ege Bamyasi, Can first took four weeks' holiday. That sunny mood is in the album. Holger Czukay travelled to Southeast Asia, Damo Suzuki to Japan, Irmin Schmidt to the south of France and Michael Karoli to the Portuguese coast. In the summer of 1973 the group recorded at their own Inner Space Studio in Weilerswist, the most complex production they had done up to then. It was the last album with singer Suzuki.

The music leaves ordinary rock structures behind and uses sounds that spread out widely, with bubbling rhythms and layers of keyboards. The title track begins with a minute of abstract electroacoustic music that grows into a groove. Bel Air was the first track to be recorded, in a single session, and it contains the recording of a bird in a meadow. Biographer Rob Young calls the album the group's most weightless achievement.

Listening

Listening tip. In Bel Air, listen to the soft opening with the wind-like sounds and to the birdsong that is worked into the piece.
