Tago Mago
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
In 1970 bassist Holger Czukay and drummer Jaki Liebezeit saw a street musician playing in front of a cafe in Munich. That evening Damo Suzuki performed with them, and he became Can's new singer. The double album Tago Mago was recorded between November 1970 and February 1971 at Schloss Nörvenich, a medieval castle near Cologne. Czukay worked with just three microphones and two two-track recorders, often sixteen hours a day, and edited the long jams into songs.
The first record is more conventional in design, the second far more experimental. Aumgn and Peking O, with Czukay's tape and radio experiments, make it the group's most extreme record. Miles Davis, Karlheinz Stockhausen and the occultist Aleister Crowley served as inspiration. The manager insisted that the second LP be released as well. The album received broad praise, and Ned Raggett called it one of the best albums ever.
