Monster Movie
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Monster Movie is Can's debut album, released in August 1969 by the small German label Music Factory. A year earlier the group had recorded Prepared to Meet Thy PNOOM, but no record company wanted to release it. Monster Movie was a second, more commercial attempt. It was recorded at Schloss Nörvenich, a fourteenth-century castle. Bassist and engineer Holger Czukay, a former student of Karlheinz Stockhausen, mastered it. Singer Malcolm Mooney sings all the songs.
The album mixes psychedelic rock, blues, free jazz and world music. The influence of The Velvet Underground can be heard above all in Father Cannot Yell. Improvisation, experiment and the editing of recordings became the basis for the later Krautrock sound. The closing track Yoo Doo Right lasts twenty minutes and was edited down from six hours of improvisation. The first pressing of five hundred copies sold out quickly, after which Liberty Records took the album on.
