Flow Motion

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Flow Motion is Can's seventh studio album and was released in October 1976. Recording began in the spring of 1976 at their own Inner Space Studio in Cologne. Since Landed the group had been working with a 16-track machine. As a result the members more often recorded their parts separately, and there were more guitar lines from Michael Karoli and more keyboards from Irmin Schmidt. The lyrics were written by engineer Peter Gilmour.

The group sounded cleaner, more playful and calmer than before and added disco and reggae. I Want More is short, catchy and danceable, reached number 26 on the British chart and brought the band to Top of the Pops. Laugh Till You Cry, Live Till You Die was Can's first reggae song, with Karoli on the Turkish bağlama. Cascade Waltz combines a reggae beat with a waltz. Critics were divided over the record.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cascade Waltz and notice how a reggae beat and a waltz time can be heard at the same time.
