Bad Bunny is the stage name of Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, born in 1994 in Bayamón and raised in Vega Baja in Puerto Rico. His father was a lorry driver and his mother a teacher. At home he heard salsa, merengue and pop ballads. At the age of five he was given a record by Vico C, a pioneer of reggaeton. After secondary school he studied audiovisual communication in Arecibo, with the aim of becoming a radio presenter, and worked as a bagger in a supermarket. He did not finish his studies.

Music and breakthrough

In 2016 he broke through with Diles, which earned him a contract with Hear This Music. He became known worldwide with I Like It, a number one in the American Billboard Hot 100. His debut album X 100pre from 2018 appears in Rolling Stone's list of the five hundred best albums. In 2020 YHLQMDLG appeared, and in 2022 Un verano sin ti. He was repeatedly the most streamed artist on Spotify and in 2026 he performed at the Super Bowl halftime show. Outside music he does wrestling and has acted in films.

Influence

Bad Bunny is called the King of Latin Trap. He combines trap, reggaeton and other styles with Spanish-language lyrics and has done much to bring Spanish-language rap and pop to the worldwide mainstream. In this way he showed that an artist from Puerto Rico did not have to ask the audience to sing in English.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Estamos Bien and notice the relaxed tempo and the light, almost sung delivery. Try to hear where the rap turns into melody.
