Merengue
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Merengue is the national dance of the Dominican Republic: fast music in 2/4 with accordion, the tambora, a double-headed drum, and the güira, a metal scraper. In the 1930s, under the dictator Trujillo, the merengue became the country's official dance music. In the late 1980s Juan Luis Guerra took it, with jazz and pop influences, to an international audience.
