Republic
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Republic is New Order's sixth studio album and was released in May 1993. It was the first album after the end of their label Factory Records. According to bassist Peter Hook, the group had to make the record to save the Haçienda, the Manchester club in which they had money invested themselves. The atmosphere was bad: Hook and Bernard Sumner could barely stand each other. While Sumner worked with Johnny Marr as Electronic, the others wrote an instrumental album, which at Sumner's request disappeared into a drawer.
Regret, the first single, was the group's last song in the British top five. The album topped the British chart and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Peter Saville designed the sleeve, with stock photographs of California that have been heavily edited. After a performance at Reading in August 1993, the group fell silent. Only in 1998 did they come together again, and their next studio album followed eight years later.
