Technique

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Technique · After years in dark London studios, New Order chose Ibiza at Peter Hook's urging. The band worked there for four months, captivated by Balearic club music, after which the album was finished at Real World Studios in Wiltshire. Bernard Sumner had been influenced by the acid scene and his visits to Shoom in London. The band wanted to keep using dance rhythms, while Hook actually preferred to remain a rock band.

Technique was released on 30 January 1989 on Factory Records and is dance rock with influences of Balearic beat and acid house. It became the first New Order album to reach number one in England. Fine Time reached number eleven, and Round & Round and Run were also singles. Hook did not think it was an Ibiza dance record, but above all a summer sound. Critics praised the honest lyrics and the cheerful tone. Later Spin called it their best album, as a meeting of punk rock and synth-pop. A lawsuit over the guitar passage in Run was settled out of court.
