New Vibe Man In Town

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

New Vibe Man In Town · This is the debut of the vibraphonist Gary Burton as a bandleader. He recorded it in 1961 for the RCA label, in Studio B of RCA Victor in New York, on 6 and 7 July. Burton plays in a trio with the bassist Gene Cherico and the drummer Joe Morello, who was known from Dave Brubeck's band.

The programme consists of eight pieces. It includes jazz standards such as Over the Rainbow, Like Someone in Love and You Stepped Out of a Dream, alongside Joy Spring by Clifford Brown and Sir John by Blue Mitchell. Minor Blues, Our Waltz and So Many Things have also found a place. In this way the album sketches the picture of a bebop-minded player who already sounds mature on the vibraphone. The AllMusic reviewer wrote that the record shows he was a brilliant player from the very start of his career.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Joy Spring and notice how the vibraphone plays the theme with only bass and drums alongside. Hear how few instruments are needed to carry the piece.
