Dave Brubeck

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The pianist Dave Brubeck grew up in California and studied composition with the French composer Darius Milhaud. His quartet with the alto saxophonist Paul Desmond played often at universities from the early 1950s and became popular with students as a result. In 1954 Brubeck appeared on the cover of Time. On Time Out (1959) the quartet played in unusual time signatures. Take Five, written by Desmond, is in five beats to the bar; Blue Rondo à la Turk alternates a Turkish rhythm of nine beats with swing. Brubeck had heard that rhythm in the street in Turkey. Take Five became a hit single. Later Brubeck also wrote masses and oratorios.
